X + Y = 0

The genius of Serbian literature, Borislav Pekic, wrote a two-hander comedy titled The Magic Suitcase of Mrs. X or X + Y = 0. In his typical humorous yet deeply thought-provoking style, Pekic opened the eternally intriguing topic of infidelity. The story, written in 1985, has only gained relevance over time as Pekic, with something almost prophetic in his vision, foresaw the direction in which male-female relationships and human civilization, in general, were heading. This exceptional work by Pekic, this time just titled X + Y = 0, will be directed by Katarina Zutic. The project is a joint effort by the Opera and Theatre Madlenianum and the Allegretto agency. The first rehearsal for X + Y = 0 took place on 15th January, and the premiere is scheduled for 28th February.

In addition to directing, Katarina Zutic will also play the role of Mrs. X, while her partner is Dejan Lutkic in the role of Mr. Y. The two actors, who have successfully collaborated many times throughout their careers, will deliver a story in which many middle-aged couples of today will recognize themselves. In a comedic and insightful way, the play will confront us with how contemporary consumer society separates us from humanity and love.

The comedy X + Y = 0, which had something futuristic in it 40 years ago, is today a very contemporary piece that will entertain, move, and also encourage the audience to reflect on their own lives, marriages, and the world we live in. We believe that Pekic will be warmly welcomed on the theatre stage by both the audience at Madlenianum and during numerous guest performances in other cities, which are already being arranged.
