Troupe of the St. Petersburg Opera Earned a Strong Ovation in Belgrade

The St. Petersburg Opera in the frameworks of its tour in Serbia presented opera Elektra by R. Strauss at the National Theatre in Belgrade (June 26, 2021), and a gala concert (June 27), as well as Esmeralda by A. Dargomyzhsky (June 28) at the Madlenianum Opera & Theatre.

“The State Chamber Music Theatre “St. Petersburg Opera” is always eagerly awaited in Serbia. Performances of the opera company bring a special inspired atmosphere of creation and celebration. The theatre offers a rich, invariably interesting program, thereby gaining the reputation of a creative team that pleases the audience with loud, exciting performances, non-standard creative experiments and unexpected solutions, which, undoubtedly, is the main merit of the artistic director of the theatre Yuri Alexandrov. The troupe of the St. Petersburg Opera took part in the celebrations on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the National Theatre in Belgrade and presented on its stage performances that captivated local audience and guests of the Serbian capital not only with the vocal skill of the performers, but also with the colorful scenery, costumes, and bright scenography. The tour in Serbia is a truly beautiful and demanded event contributing to the preservation of enduring cultural values, which serves to strengthen international humanitarian cooperation,” said Director of the Russki Dom in Belgrade Evgeny Baranov.

“Belgrade is the first European capital where we brought A. Dargomyzhsky's Esmeralda. The work of the great Russian composer turned out to be undeservedly forgotten, we restored it and showed it to people who cherish opera art with great success. Elektra is played quite often in Europe, unlike in Russia. This is our newest production, this season’s premiere. The Serbian audience greeted both productions with enthusiasm, and we received many positive reviews. The National Theatre in Belgrade and the Madlenianum Opera & Theatre have already begun negotiations with us to come on tour next season. We always receive ovation on our tour, it is a real success for us,” said Yuri Alexandrov, artistic director and founder of the St. Petersburg Opera, People's Artist of Russia.

In addition to performances, on June 28, a master class by Yuri Alexandrov was conducted at the Russki Dom in Belgrade. Students of the University of Arts in Belgrade received important advices from the director from the point of view of the author's vision of the performance.

“The tour was supported by the Government of St. Petersburg and the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg. We extremely appreciate the help that they provide to us and the fact that we have the opportunity to represent our city abroad. We would also like to express our gratitude to the Russki Dom in Belgrade, the National Theatre in Belgrade and the Madlenianum Opera & Theatre for many years of friendship and warm welcome,” said Evgenii Malygin, General Manager of the St. Petersburg Opera.
