Stevan Hristić

THE DUSK

The first premiere of the independent production of Madlenianum in the new season is the national opera THE DUSK, of the composerStevan Hristić, directed by Nebojsa Bradić and under the baton ofVesna Šouc.

The premiere of this significant work of art of our domestic composer is to be held on 22nd October on the Large Stage of Madlenianum, and it will also be performed within the 48. BEMUS.

The first revival of the opera THE DUSK is in the repertoire on 24th October.

Our work on Hristić’s opera The Dusk has lasted for two years and during this time, in cooperation with the Serbian Musicological Society and thanks to them, the score transcription has been done as well as the editing score transcription of this opera, without which the work on it would be impossible.  As the ballet act scores has been lost since this opera was last performed in Belgrade, at the National Theatre in 1954, two performances at SNT Novi Sad in 1994 and 2001 were done without a ballet act.

The Dusk is a chamber opera, with no choir and one- act play, the second one performed on our stage. It was written in 1923 and performed in 1925 (Binički’s At Dawn was the first one). During 1953 and 1954, the author additionally wrote and composed a ballet act and all these years we have just had the tape ballet suite recording at Radio Belgrade.

Our performance is of the national significance since it is a word about one of the best Serbian operas in general, one of the most prominent composers in the period after Mokranjac.  Besides that, it is an integral performance the nowadays generations have had no opportunity to see and hear so far.

The destinies and names of three academicians intertwine about this project. They are Stevan ristić, Ivo Vijnović whose The Dusk is a part of his Trilogy of Dubrovnik and Jovan Dučić, whose poem “The Dreams” is a part of the integral scope and serves as one of the leading arias. What is being planned in this sense and out of these reasons, together with the Serbian Musicological Society, is the Symposium on the creation of all three academicians. We believe it will be under the auspices of SASA.

What will be issued on the occasion of the performance besides the Program booklet is a special publication on the opera and Vojnovic as well, also translated in English.

BALKAN DANCE PROJECT VOL. 2

Balkan Dance Project is an international dance project that connects successful young choreographers, dancers and artists from Slovenia, Serbia, Macedonia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It explores, throughout individual stories, the mutual experience of living in the Balkans.

Each of them touches, through their unique aesthetic, both individual and universal topics that affect all of us. The project brings creativity, the integration of the artists from different countries but with common cultural heritage, the mobility of cultural workers and intercultural dialect in the language of art.  Besides bonding, connecting artists and cultural exchange, the Dance Project aims to develop modern or contemporary ballet in wider region, present dance productions in smaller towns and to educate young people.

After the successful dance performances within the Balkan Dance Project (He He Helium and Balkan Dance Project Vol. 1), by which the Project has presented itself not only in the region but on the international stages as well, the artistic team of the Balkan Dance Project with its 6 new dancers coming from Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, has been preparing a new dance Balkan Dance Project Vol.2, in cooperation with the Opera and Theatre Madlenianum (Serbia) and Velenje Festival (Slovenia) that will be performed for the first time on 8th October 2016 on the Large Stage of the Opera and Theater Madlenianum at 19:30h.

The chosen dancers, Mojca Majcen, Ema Janković, Vladimir Čubrilo, Branko Mitrović, Luka Živković and Jakša Filipovac will participate in the choreographies of A Wreath of Sonnets by France Prešern of Aleksandar Ilic and Natalie Iwaniec and The Cube of Igor Kirov.

After its premiere at the Opera and Theatre Madlenianum, Balkan Dance Project will be performed on 13th and 17th October in Velenje and on 18th October in Sezana (Slovenia).

costume: Teemu Muurimäki
sound design: Marco Melchior
choreographer’s assistants: Henrikki Heikkilä, Satu Halttunen

duration: 60’
premiere: Helsinki Festival, Finnish National Opera, 2014

Movement is a perpetual source of inspiration for me. In my works, I aim to create a living, multi-layered, powerfully expressive movement that rises up from primal wellsprings. In this new work I particularly wanted to play around with opposing forces and frictions. The last work that I choreographed solely for men - my group's first piece, and still in our repertoire: "Westward Ho!" - came of age in 2004. Eighteen years on, I have felt a need to bring together men of different ages and various dance backgrounds, this time to address themes such as change and sensuality. I can't deny that reaching half a century and having a performing career of more than 30 years behind me have influenced my desire specifically to use the art of dance to deal with the shifting, mutating feelings that a man experiences. When I was looking for music for the piece, I came across Esa-Pekka Salonen's compositions "Concert etude for solo horn" (2000), "Foreign Bodies" (2001) and "Violin Concerto" (2009). What inspired me about them, apart from their kinetic quality, was the way in which they switch from the brutally aggressive to the soft. Salonen's music has provided a thought - a provocative, multi-dimensional initial spark for dealing with the manifold emotions and virtuosity of a man - of a man dancing. Undaunted by the extremes of sensitivity and heroism, and all that lies between them, these eight dancers and I have aspired to the boundlessness of the expressive power of the human body, of liberating movement - and of being a man.

                                                                                                                                                                                               Tero Saarinen

Tero Saarinen
has had a distinguished international career both as a dancer and a choreographer. He has created more than 40 works, for the Tero Saarinen Company and other prominent dance groups.  Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT1), Batsheva Dance Company, Ballet Gullbenkian, the ballet companies of Lyon, Lorraine and Marseille, Gothenburg Opera Ballet, National Dance Company of Korea, Finnish National Ballet, and many others have featured Saarinen's works in their repertoires. His key works for the Tero Saarinen Company include the company's international breakthrough "Westward Ho!", and "Petrushka", "Hunt", "Borrowed Light" and Jean Sibelius´s "Kullervo" in collaboration with the Finnish National Opera. As a choreographer Saarinen is known for his unique movement language, while his internationally acclaimed titles have often been described as total artworks. Saarinen has received numerous acknowledgements of his work as an artist, both in Finland and abroad.

The primary aim of the Tero Saarinen Company, founded by Tero Saarinen in 1996, is to promote a humane worldview and basic human values through the language of dance, while also increasing people's understanding of their own physicality and its significance for a good life. The Tero Saarinen Company has appeared in nearly 40 countries, and its activities include running an international teaching programme and community outreach projects. In addition, Saarinen and his team collaborate with other prominent dance groups, among them NDT 1, Batsheva Dance Company, Lyon Opéra Ballet and the Finnish National Ballet. His choreographic style reflects influences ranging from butoh and martial arts to classical ballet and Western contemporary dance. His works, which have won wide international acclaim, are characteristically total artworks: combinations of strong performers, striking visuals and, often, live music. The company is in permanent residence at Helsinki's Alexander Theatre - the former home of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet, where Saarinen started his career in the 1980's. The Tero Saarinen Company provides work for about 80 individuals each year, eight of whom have full-time posts. The Company's operations are supported by Finland's Ministry of Education and Culture and The City of Helsinki.

Energetic one-hour piece by Finnish star choreographer Tero Saarinen --- proves that a narrated story is not a prerequisite for great dance… The classical jumps alone are breath-taking. Tremendous applause!

Kompanija je nastupala u preko 40 zemalja sveta, a njene dodatne aktivnosti podrazumevaju vođenje međunarodnih programa obuke igrača i projekte namenjene lokalnoj zajednici. Rad kompanije podržavaju Ministarstvo obrazovanja i kulture Finske i Grad Helsinki.

Retko viđena, čudesna kombinacija snage i nežnosti koja dočarava potencijal igre.

Energični jednočasovni komad, finske koreografske zvezde Tera Sarinena -  dokazuje da ispričana priča nije preduslov za veliku igru… Klasični skokovi sami za sebe oduzimaju dah. Ogroman aplauz!
